Visions

These cases go beyond premonition or a vague intuitive feeling—the people involved reported having a clear vision of a loved one and thus learning of the loved one’s death. In these cases it seems the people could not have known of the deaths through normal means.

Here’s a selection of cases from dozens compiled by Dr. Bruce Greyson at the University of Virginia in his 2010 paper “Seeing Dead People Not Known to Have Died,” published by the American Anthropological Association.

Dr. Greyson wrote: “Cases of this kind provide some of the most persuasive evidence for the survival of consciousness after bodily death.”

Eddie Cuomo, 9, was in a feverish state for almost two days. He awoke at 3 a.m. after his fever broke and told his parents and Dr. K. M. Dale that he had seen deceased family members, including his grandfather. The boy had also seen his 19-year-old sister, Teresa, who was away at college. Eddie’s father had talked to her a couple days before and all was well. Later that day, the family learned Teresa had died in a car accident at midnight—just a few hours before Eddie’s vision.

Woman in Car Accident Sees Her Father Who Died an Hour Before
A Native American woman was in a car accident and was dying. She told a stranger who’d stopped to help her: “If you ever get near the Indian reservation, please tell my mother that I was OK. Not only OK, but very happy because I am already with my dad.” The stranger found her mother and related the message. It turns out the woman’s father had unexpectedly died of a coronary an hour before the car accident.

In 19th century England, Mrs. Hicks was on her deathbed. Her son, Eddie, in Australia was healthy and well as far as everyone in England knew. Mrs. Hicks said: “Poor Eddie; oh, he is looking very ill; he has had a fall.” She continued to talk of “poor Eddie” until she died later that day. As was later discovered, Eddie had become ill and in a fever had fallen from his horse to his death on the same day his mother had the vision.

Boy Sees Mother’s Dead High School Sweetheart
A 7-year-old boy was dying of leukemia when he told his mother he had been in heaven. In heaven, said the boy, a man had introduced himself as her old boyfriend who was crippled in a car accident. The mother was sure she’d never told her son about this old boyfriend. She later found out that the old boyfriend had died the same day her son had the vision.

‘Oh, Will, are you there?’
An elderly woman was dying in the United States, surrounded by her grandchildren. Just before she died, she said, “Oh, Will, are you there?” The only person named Will in the family was a great-uncle in England. Her family later learned that Will had died two days before the woman.
