THE BRITISH Government has withheld crucial files relating to the infamous Rendlesham UFO incident, a senior army colonel has sensationally claimed.
Colonel Charles Halt, one of the key US military witnesses during the perplexing incident, claims important details were missing when the MoD released formerly classified files on the case which dates back to 1980.
The UFO sighting happened when three US officers based at RAF Bentwaters claimed a “triangular shaped craft” landed in neighbouring woods in the early hours of December 26 1980. Retired Col Halt, 76, who was base deputy commander at the time, claimed three officers who first saw the lights, and then a UFO “on the floor”, could not account for a 40 minute period while searching in the woods when their communication systems went “off air”.
H said: “When the documents were released, the time frame when I was involved in the incident is missing – it’s gone missing.” Col Halt spoke ahead of the publication of a new book which details the Rendlesham case from his perspective for the first time.
He also claimed the conclusions of MoD investigations into what happened had never seemed to be released. He added: “In the last six years the British have released a ton of information, but has anybody ever seen what their conclusions were, or heard anything about Rendlesham officially?”
Col Halt became involved in the Rendlesham incident on the second night after the officers reported the missing time. The three officers – John Burroughs, Bud Steffens, and James Penniston, later told of feeling “static” as they observed the object’s flashing lights and hieroglyphic-like markings.
Mr Halt then said on the evening of December 27 1980 that officers had shouted: “It’s back, the UFO’s back.”
He went to investigate with a team who found three 1.5inch “impact holes”, damage to the canopies of trees and “higher radiation levels” in the “landing” area A plaster cast was later taken of one of the holes, but mysteriously disappeared from a box it was stored in. He said soon after they saw a mysterious object in a field between the woods and a farmhouse with “a red light moving”.
Col Halt, who retired in June 1992, is one of the most senior former US military men to go public over aliens and UFOs.
He served several combat tours in South East Asia and was a USAF F-16 Base Commander in both Korea and Belgium, serving 28 years in military commission service. Remarkably, he also claimed there is a secretive organisation which continues to investigate Rendlesham and other UFO phenomena behind the scenes.
He said: “There is an agency, a very close held compartmentalised agency, that has been investigating the whole UFO subject including this incident for many years, and there’s a very active role played by many of our intelligence agencies that probably don’t even know the full picture of the collected data which is then forwarded on. It’s kind of scary isn’t it?”
But, although admitting to being paranoid about going public, he said he believed his senior rank had prevented him ever being harassed over his disclosures.
He added: “I have never been harassed over the reports I made about the Bentwaters UFO incidents – probably for a couple of good reasons; number one, my rank and some of the jobs that I have held, but also very early on, I sat down and made a very detailed tape and made several copies of everything I know about it and they secluded away. Maybe I’m paranoid, but I think it was time well spent when I made the tapes.”
The new book – The Halt Perspective – is published by Haunted Skies and written by UFO expert John Hanson.
A Haunted Skies spokesman said: “It contains, for the first time ever, an unprecedented explosion of comments as to what did happen according to now world-famous retired Colonel Chares Halt, former Deputy Base Commander at RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters Airbase, in late December 1980, when reported UFO activity took place, over three nights, in the nearby Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk. Incredibly, it was even reported that Aliens were seen.”
Mr Hanson said: “The evidence of this book about UFOs is just in itself explosive in nature and speaks volumes!
“There is a colossal difference, in my opinion, between low grade UFO files declassified by the MoD as part of their release into the public sector over the last 20 years, and so many other reports which go back to the mid to the end of the last century, many of which I have investigated that will never see the light of day.
“During the last 35 years there have been a number of books written about this intriguing case that continues to excite the public’s imaginations with lurid, chilling, encounters between alien beings and the base commander – Gordon Williams, following bizarre claims of spacecraft crashing into the forest and spare parts being ordered to facilitate their repair and subsequent take-off.
“Over the years there have been many explanations offered for what it was that the airmen saw, ranging from the bizarre to ridiculous – the lighthouse, fertiliser on fire pranks, moth traps, downed aircraft, and of portals opening in the forest.
“Each and every one of these claims comes under the scrutiny of the man who was there and witnessed for himself examples of that UFO activity – Colonel Charles Halt – who now, for the first time ever, merely wishes to set the record straight.”
Express.co.uk has contacted the MoD for comment, but it has previously said it no longer discusses the UFO subject.
