Hawkhill, Lesbury, Northumberland
Reported August 15 (38)

Northumberland Gazette:

“Motorists, cyclists or walkers heading south from Alnmouth towards Warkworth may have spotted what could be evidence of visitors from another world as two crop circles or markings have appeared in fields. In one, a circular shape can be clearly seen and the other is a more random arrangement, both in a field of ripened crops. But in the past, crop circles in north Northumberland have been branded ‘vandalism’ and the cost to farmers has been counted. Northumberland Estates confirmed that people had been seen
making the circles in the field on August 19, 2011.

There had been much speculation about the artistic creation in a field near Hawkhill, between Alnwick and Alnmouth, on land belonging to the Estates’ Percy Farms. At the time, a National Farmers’ Union spokesman said: “It’s trespass, it’s vandalism, it’s stealing, it’s whatever you want to call it, it’s breaking the law. “That area won’t be able to be combined and harvested and if it’s on about an acre of land, at about three or four tonnes an acre at £150 or £160 each tonne, that’s £500, so it’s a costly thing. “If someone broke windows to that amount, they would be in trouble. People have been locked up for doing far less in the riots. “People may say that it’s the Duke’s land and he can afford it, but can they? And it happens to small farms as well, it’s just stupidity.
“They are stealing because they are taking money away from that farm. It doesn’t only happen to the big landowners. What about the guy next door with 100 acres?”

A spokeswoman for the Northumberland Estates said: “While some might see it as an amusing prank, it is in fact vandalism which has resulted in part of a wheat crop being destroyed and wildlife being disturbed at a time when many birds and animals are busy rearing their young.”

Reported August 11 2014 (36)

The ring is approximately 250ft diameter. A clear pattern of crushing and creasing of the laid wheat made it clear that this event was a mechanically produced cc hoax. Further, the laid plants were/are kinked over at dramatically varying hights above ground level, suggesting a very lumpy and inconsistent delivery system was employed at the site..

Reported August 8 2014 (35)

Report by Horace Drew:
This new crop picture was drawn in a field near Green Street of July 29, not far from Avebury. It shows from above a “six pointed star”. However one has to examine it carefully on the ground, to see a true wealth of fascinating details in the fallen crop.

Within each outer curved section of fallen crop, between each of six “points” for that “star”, one can see nine contra-rotating swirls of crop which turn right-left-right-left-right-left-right-left-right going out from the centre, until they reach a tenth circular swirl on each outer edge. All six of those “edge swirls” show slightly different patterns in the lay which we could not easily characterize.

Close to the centre, there was a thick layer of standing crop which one could not walk across, without making a trail through still-standing plants. In the flattened centre, we could see two complete circular swirls laid right (clockwise) then left (anti-clockwise), as we went in toward a tall “peak” of standing crop at the very centre.

Wilmington (Long Man) East Sussex
Reported July 3 2014 (19)

This new formation in wheat is the second to appear in East Sussex in 2014, after a complete absence of the phenomenon in the county for several years. This is more complex than the earlier single circle in Falmer (about nine miles from here), and lies around a quarter of a mile west from the famous ‘Long Man of Wilmington’ emblem on the chalk downs, the origin and age of which remains a mystery in itself, although it is reckoned to be at least several hundred years old if not older.

Although the Wilmington formation lies to the west of the little country road (‘The Street’) that runs near the Long Man, and is it easy to see that something is there in the field, it is hard to get a clear view of its pattern from that angle. Aerial shots reveal a rather smart pentagon motif containing a central star and radiating semi-circles, neatly laid out. As an approximation, it is probably about 150 feet in diameter.

A curious little oddity…

Near Swindon, Wiltshire
Reported June 29 2014 (16)

The farmer of this land kindly allowed us access to this circle for a fast ground inspection prior to him cutting the formation out, (which he has now done we understand). The barley in this field is a ‘seed-crop’ and as such is (relatively speaking) extremely valuable stock – so we can quite understand the landowner being extremely upset at what he considers to be a premeditated vandalism event in his field. On the ground the circle was extremely mashed and crushed in a pattern of damage that left one with no doubt that this was a mechanically produced circle, and a rather rushed one at that. Attempts to weave the crop looked rushed and clumsy with particularly massive damage to the laid plants in these areas. The farmer is preparing this field for harvest and will be very angry if people attempt to enter his field.

“Hi Charles…Here are some pics of the Hod hill circle…..
It was a difficult circle to find at ground level even though I knew roughly where to find it.
I have come across this before in Barley fields. I literally had to take pot luck going up a tram line to find it and it wasnt until I was practically on top of it that I found it. Sadly I found the lay to be very messy and the crop was badly damaged and broken at the base of the stalks. Whoever was responsible for it evidently had no respect for the crop and I was not at all impressed by it. I took a walk to the top of Hod hill and the circle can be seen from there.
Cheers Matey.

“Hi Charles…here are the photos…
My impression of the circle when I first saw the ariel shot was that it looked a bit shabby so I was’nt surprised to find it messy on the ground with an excess of damaged broken crop snapped at the stalk base. I spoke to the Farmer, a pleasant chap, who was a bit bewildered by it. I suggested he put out a money box and we are awaiting his decision.

Brimslade. Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire
Reported April 16 2014 (1)

Approximately 95% of the laid Oil-Seed-Rape (OSR) plants examined were noted as having had suffered massive crushing and scraping trauma during the flattening process – due to a very lumpy mechanical method being employed to vandalise this crop field. The preponderance of our on-site observations clearly indicate that this event is a clumsy fake crop circle with a well recognised technique being employed in it’s creation.
